Henzel Studio Collaborations, THE NEW Gallery, Los Angeles

Twentieth and THE NEW Gallery showcase the Henzel Studio Collaborations exhibition launching for the 2019 edition of the Los Angeles Design Festival.

Launched in 2016 by Stefan Lawrence, founder of Twentieth, and co-curated by Artist Daniele Albright, THE NEW is located next door to Twentieth’s Los Angeles gallery and presents a rotation of exhibitions throughout the year. During the 2019 edition of the Los Angeles Design Festival, THE NEW hosted Henzel Studio Collaborations; a collection of limited edition artist rugs designed by some of the most prominent names in contemporary art.

The exhibition marks the 20th Anniversary of both Twentieth and Henzel Studio and will feature rug designs by artists, including works by Richard Prince, Helmut Lang and Marilyn Minter. It will also mark the US debut of rug designs by Tony Oursler, Ashley Bickerton, Jwan Yosef and Carsten Höller as well as the first rug created for Henzel Studio by Videre Licet.

The collection of stand-out contemporary designs adorn the walls of the gallery, some extended onto the floor in creative fashion.  Carsten Höller's 'Mushroom Carpet' adds a humorous touch at the entrance to the gallery, replicating the artist's flamboyant creations. The icon that is Marilyn Monroe, closely associated with Los Angeles also attracts guests’ attention to the ground with a colourful Andy Warhol design, presented in a form that steers away from the classic rectangular rug design, proudly displaying cut-outs, frayed edges and uneven borders.

Lawrence Weiner's 'From Before and After' design immediately caught my attention with its striking colour and bold lettering. The 100% silk rug blurs the boundaries between classic rug design and artwork and is a limited design of fifty pieces to be made.

The Henzel Studio Collaborations exhibition launched for the Los Angeles Design Festival between June 20th and 23rd and continues to run throughout the Summer with free admission for guests. Check the Twentieth and THE NEW gallery websites for opening times and details.
