Maison & Objet 2018

Highlights and the latest design discoveries from the January 2018 edition of Maison & Objet in Paris.

As another hugely successful Maison & Objet comes to a close, it is time to reminisce about the incredible brands, innovative designs and wonderful new discoveries that we can take home. With the start of the design year officially opened, Maison & Objet has the world talking and it is already shaping up to be a very exciting for design indeed. With an abundance of top designers showcasing, I have selected my top six brands and designs from the trade event.

Tom Dixon

Returning to the show with a plethora of new objects and designs, Tom Dixon has officially moved into the soft accessories market. Showcasing a range of super-soft throws in beautiful bold colourways and a series of abstract and artistic cushions, it is only a matter of time before this iconic British brand takes over the world. Expanding their already successful candle collections, the show also introduced the brand new Materialism candles 'Terrazzo' and 'Cork' joining an impressive lineup of scented sculptural candle designs.

SERIP Lighting

Stopping visitors in their tracks, SERIP is internationally recognised for their captivating lighting designs. Inspired by the beautiful and intricate forms in nature, this company can take an object of beauty and transform it into something awe-inspiring. Two designs attracting the attention at this year's stand were the 'Aqua' and 'Folio' collection chandeliers. Aqua takes its inspiration from raindrops in the Winter, elegantly suspended, frozen in time whilst glistening in the sun. Folio is reminiscent of the Autumn season as golden leaves are blown off the trees, effortlessly floating to the ground.

Lalique / Damien Hirst

When two superpowers collide - being an avid fan of Lalique for many years, I always find their collaborations to be some of the very best. Teaming up with an artist with a very different feel, the two brands have created something truly amazing. Hirst's fascination with death has been transferred into opulent crystal, adding a luxurious layer to his familiar and much-loved works. The collaboration demonstrates Lalique’s incredible ability to remain current, attracting new markets whilst exhibiting a passion for tradition and high-quality craft, never losing sight of what the brand is about.

Martha Sturdy

Injecting fun and vibrancy into the hall, Martha Sturdy launched her latest collection called 'Prime', a series of geometric resin furniture displayed in eye-catching primary colours. From the moment Sturdy's stand comes into sight, there is an immediate draw of curiosity to find out more. The designs have such simplicity to them that it strips back the use and function, creating objects that almost become easier to use, playful and enjoyable to be around. Having the pleasure of meeting Martha on the stand, the talented artist informed me it was about bringing positivity back into our lives in a world that has become congested with information and stress.

Nude Glass

Contemporary glassware brand 'Nude' put on an impressive display, exhibiting their diverse collections of designs from the intriguing 'Memento Mori' skull range of bowls and ornaments designed by Ali Bakova and Erdem Akan to the new release 'Parrot' water carafe and glasses by Tomas Kral. What is so special about Nude Glass is its enthusiasm to take risks, producing designs that stand out from the crowd, allowing designers to represent the very best of themselves. This attitude has put the brand at the forefront of glassware and accessory design, leaving visitors amazed by the unique creations from the new generation of design.

Zaha Hadid Design

Transfering the architectural skill from an international design icon to a small scale is exactly what the team at Zaha Hadid Design have managed to achieve. Known for the dramatic curves and futuristic forms of grand-scale projects, it is fascinating to witness the evolution of the design studio as it expands into luxury homeware and accessories. With twisted 'Braid' vases and the 'Shimmer' collection of colourful tea light holders just a few products on display, it most certainly is an exciting time for the brand and I cannot wait to see what they produce next.
