Thomas Heatherwick 'Vessel' Hudson Yards, New York

Thomas Heathewick designs the centrepiece of New York's Hudson Yards development.

At the heart of the Hudson Yards development on New York's West Side is a giant honeycomb-like sculpture towering above the plaza below. Designed by British designer Thomas Heatherwick, 'Vessel' is a brand new icon for the city that never sleeps. Visitors are invited to climb the structure's 154 Escher-like staircases to the top for a unique take and views of the city skyline and surrounding area.

The undersides of the staircases and handrails are clad in copper coloured metal, providing striking contrast in views when outside looking up and inside looking downwards. In total, the 'Vessel' consists of 2,500 steps, 154 flights of stairs, and 80 landings rising to a total of 16 stories high. The structure's name is a working title, commonly noted with a 'TKA' abbreviation, meaning "Temporarily Known As". The owners have asked the public to contribute their suggestions for a formal name that is due to be announced in the foreseeable future.

Please note that the Vessel is closed to the public for the foreseeable future.
