Masterpiece Presents…Phyllida Barlow with Hauser & Wirth

Masterpiece Presents Phyllida Barlow with Hauser & Wirth for this year's central installation at the exhibition's entrance.

Every year, Masterpiece showcases an impressive installation at the exhibition's entrance, giving a taster of the show and transporting visitors into the world of luxury, art, design and antiques. Collaborating with some of the World's best artists and designers over the years, the installation has become a staple of the show and one of Masterpiece's most highly coveted projects. This year, the show has collaborated with Phyllida Barlow to create a vibrant sculptural installation in conjunction with Hauser & Wirth, referencing the supersized ‘pom-pom’ works she first developed in the 1990s.

One of Britain’s leading contemporary female artists, Phyllida Barlow is well-known for using found materials like plaster, cardboard and cement that create unique and often colourful sculptures in a time where the environment, materials and recycling have become a hot topic.

“I’ve never bought into the idea of looking at a sculpture from just one viewpoint. What makes sculptures different from paintings is that they can be walked around and looked at from 360 different viewpoints, where each one slightly contradicts the next”

Barlow's installation takes over the entrance to the show, filling the space with large and colourful pom-poms, created from hundreds of pieces of discarded fabrics.  Suspended on a series of wooden beams, colour matched to the fabric hues, the pom-poms slowly move and turn as more and more visitors pass by and engage with the designs.
