COS X Mamou-Mani: Conifera
For its eighth instalment, COS partnered with architect Arthur Mamou-Mani to create 'Conifera', an installation constructed from 3D-printed bioplastic bricks.
Returning to Milan Design Week for its eighth consecutive year, fashion brand COS teamed up with Architect Arthur Mamou-Mani to create its latest instalment 'Conifera', a beautiful installation that flowed through the courtyard and into the gardens of Palazzo Isimbardi, constructed entirely from 3D-printed bioplastic blocks. The sculpture looked toward the future of design, tech and material innovation, creating an experience that moves between architecture and nature.
PLA was used to create each of the 3D-printed blocks; a fully compostable bioplastic, created using renewable resources. The translucent sections of the installation are PLA in their purest form, whereas the white parts contain pigment and the defining brown hue seen was created by adding the wood pulp from fir trees. The way that cones grow naturally on these evergreen trees is reminiscent of how the bio-bricks were designed, giving the installation its name 'Conifera'.
The bricks were created through the use of open-source software, using parametric design to maintain structural stability while optimising the use of its materials.
