Coco Dávez: Faceless

Coco Dávez presents her first solo exhibition in the UK 'Faceless' at the Maddox Gallery in Westbourne Grove, London.

Coco Dávez launches her first solo exhibition in the UK titled 'Faceless' at the Maddox Gallery, Westbourne Grove. Her signature technique is achieved through unconstrained brushwork and pure acrylic colour on canvas, paying homage to the artists who have deeply inspired her practice. Experimenting with colour and shape, Dávez’s subjects are a diverse mix of cultural and historical influences ranging from celebrities, musicians, actors, artists and political figures.

Dávez engages with the dialogue of popular culture and society’s obsession with icons. Large and vibrant canvases portray a range of notable people from Amy Winehouse to Frida Kahlo, David Bowie to David Hockney, the outline of each person is a smooth blend of vibrant, contrasting colours and dark shadows. Seeking a new way to combine Neorealism and Pop Art, Dávez’s decision to eliminate facial features from her works adds a semi-abstract layer to each painting and immediately invites the viewer to partake in a guessing game of “Guess Who?”.

Character's iconic features such as dress style, hairstyles and accessories help define the faceless creations, giving hints and clues as to the individuals that inspired the works. The simplicity of design paired with the selected bold colour palettes create exciting works that immediately attract the eye and put the brain into motion. These pieces not only capture some of the most famous cultural figures around the world, but they also inject a sense of fun, vibrancy and timelessness into an interior, certainly attracting the attention and love that they deserve.

Dávez' 'Faceless' exhibition will be on display at Maddox Gallery, Westbourne Grove between 10th - 31st May 2019.
