April Key: Ocean Drive

April Key exhibits her 'Ocean Drive' sculptural lighting collection, inspired by the Art Deco architecture of Miami.

During the 2019 edition of Milan Design Week, April Key showcased her mesmerising 'Ocean Drive' collection of sculptural lighting designs within the Isola district of the city. The collection is a fusion of Art Deco inspired architecture, lighting and sculpture, taking reference from a series of lost 1950's Kodachrome negatives discovered by Key at a flea market in Istanbul. Revealing raw images of Miami, in particular, Ocean Drive, it set in motion the ideas to create the impressive neon collection of designs.

The pieces are constructed from laser-cut plexiglass to create dramatic Art Deco inspired forms. Vibrant neon lights reminiscent of the eccentric Miami nightlife further define the sculptures, casting multi-coloured reflections into their surroundings. The lights have been handcrafted in Turkey; where Key is located, by experienced ateliers. The completed pieces can only be described as mesmerising, immediately catching the eye, taking the viewer back in time.
