Jacu Strauss and his team at LORE Studio design Ryan Chetiyawardana's Super Lyan cocktail bar at the De Witt Hotel, Amsterdam.
Jacu Strauss along with his team at LORE Studio design the colourful interiors of Ryan Chetiyawardana's Super Lyan cocktail bar at the De Witt Hotel in Amsterdam. The concept centres around colourful and playful experimentation, the studio taking its inspiration from the art and architecture of the 1950s, using bold colours, simple forms and vibrant colours often associated with the design and style of the era.
Super Lyan divides into three areas, each with unique defining styles; the garden, bar and living room. Man-made materials such as white patterned concrete blocks and terrazzo flooring provide the foundation of design for the garden room, paired with the bionic blue hues of the lounge upholstery and feature pendant and table lighting from Tom Dixon. Pops of red, purple and mustard yellow have also been included in select feature seating to add a playful and touch to the interior, channelling the Golden Age of Palm Springs in the middle of last century.
The main bar continues the theme of playfulness, taking its inspiration from an ice-cream dessert, served in a classic 50's diner. The countertop creates the effect of chocolate sprinkles while the sides of the bar mimic the layering of the desert, paired with cherry red button barstools. The rest of the colour scheme takes influence from a photographic series by Kelsey McClellan and Michelle Maguire, cleverly match blocking colour with food. In contrast to the bright white surroundings of the garden, the bar takes on a darker tone, playing with pattern and texture through an eclectic mix of vibrant upholstery fabric for the raised seating, bar stools and drapery. Glossy paint finishes, lacquered surfaces and coloured mirror elevate the reflection of light and movement within the room, creating an additional layer of excitement and energy as the evening progresses.
The Lounge takes the concept of mid-century design and mixes it with a collection of psychedelic colours and striking retro designs, twisting the 50's inspired interior and projecting it in an abstract form. Echoing a similar colour palette to the main bar, the lounge presents a softer, relaxed side, using velvets, wools and knits in seating and furniture designs that allow guests to sit back, socialise and relax. Bar stools and high tables give way to lower lounge seating, armchairs and coffee tables. A vintage home bar takes centre stage with its golden metallic hues and red coloured glassware, complete with two matching vintage bar stools.
While the bar is part of the Kimpton De Witt hotel, it is run as an independent entity, showcasing a lively and unique character that not only reflects in its design but its cocktails and service. The team at LORE studio have perfectly captured Ryan Chetiyawardana's vision, creating an interior that echoes the world's most awarded bartender's signature approach of creating exciting new versions of the familiar. Super Lyan is an experience not to miss out.
