Selfridges New Accessories Hall

A department store that I have always associated with theatre, excitement and glamour. Selfridges have always been at the forefront of the shopping experience, constantly reinventing themselves, setting the precedent for other stores to follow. The impressive London department store on Oxford Street has once again proved that it can shed its skin to reveal another beauty, this time in the form of the Accessories Hall. Located in the former women's street, the store has removed the concrete tiles and cluttered walkways and replaced them with glistening white marble and decorative temple like columns.

Designed in collaboration with David Chipperfield Architects, this new space doubles the size of the existing accessories department and is the new home to many iconic designer labels, selling every accessory that you could possibly dream of, from designer bags to jewellery, tech accessories and even home pieces. The space also contains ten flagship boutiques: Balenciaga, Burberry, Chanel, Céline, Chloé, Chrome Hearts, Gucci, Loewe, Mulberry and Saint Laurent. Each of these boutiques has been designed to reflection the brand’s aesthetic essentially removing the department and creating miniature stores within a store.

I had the great pleasure of attending the opening, being invited to discover the Swarovski Atelier home collection as it settles into it's brand new luxury home. I was amazed to discover the classic Swarovski trait, witnessing first hand how the crystals change colour and reflect different lights. Seeing them in the crisp white light of the Accessories hall reveals the rainbow of colour reflected in each crystal as shown by the images above. The Swarovski collection has also launched exclusively with Selfridges, giving visitors another reason to visit the store.

Whilst everyone may have been looking at the bags, I was admiring the light fixtures, fittings and grandeur of the new space. The beautiful pearl lights with brass fixtures were the perfect finishing touch, adding reference to the store's heritage and glamorous past whilst lavishly setting the stage for a brand new contemporary style. At the heart of the hall is the new fourteen-seater concept cocktail bar, The Fount, serving fashionable cocktails, tisanes and water infusions for when you need to take a rest stop in style from all the shopping.

With the stage set, I look forward to seeing how the space is used and transforms with the seasons, whist obviously enjoying a cocktail at the Fount bar. In the nine years that I have lived in London, this store is almost entirely unrecognisable from the first time I pushed my way through the famous spinning front doors. It has been an incredible journey for this landmark and I cannot wait to see where it takes us next.
