Earlier in the year, We Blog Design invited a group of bloggers to Sarabande for a celebratory cocktail for a hugely successful year with an exciting one to come. The event was also a fantastic opportunity to learn more about Sarabande, a wonderful foundation established in the memory of Lee Alexander McQueen and passions and beliefs that creative minds with a potential to push boundaries should be given the same opportunities that he was able to enjoy. The foundation is there to observe and facilitate whilst the partners and friends of Lee guide and inspire their talented scholars.

Ketel One Vodka is a founding partner of the Sarabande Foundation and one of their first projects undertaken was to create a unique and artistic installation in the form of a bar. This beautiful copper design, as seen above, was designed by contemporary Dutch artist, Tord Boontje. As part of his design process, Tord took inspiration from Dutch style and design cues of Ketel One Vodka, united with the unique elements and influences of McQueen’s creations.

Swarovski is also a partner to the foundation, having supported and developing new talent across a series of partnerships and foundations across the world. The brand's ethos is to push the boundaries of creativity with crystal and has offered financial support as well as donating over 100 million crystals to more than 150 designers in New York, London, Milan, and Paris.

Touring the studios and workshops, I had the great pleasure of meeting two scholars from the foundation, each with their unique take and creative talent. Esna Su (work above) explores the issues of identity and memory and how these are shaken in the context of political instability. Using traditional Turkish techniques of weaving, twining, needlework, and crochet, Su creates wearable sculptures with deep meaning that evokes a strong and emotional reaction.

Mircea Telegra is a painter that explores the past to understand the present. His works feature personal and emotional responses to places and landscapes that have been scarred with the memory of tragic events. Previewing some of his pieces in the studio, there is so much energy and passion caught within the canvas, portrayed through vivid shades of oil paint against black and greys.

The Sarabande foundation blew me away in all terms of creativity, passion, and inspiration. It is so great to see support for talented individuals that may not have been able to achieve their true potential without this help and guidance. Creativity should never be limited to the privileged and because of Lee Alexander McQueen, there is more expression in talent in the world.
