London Craft Week: Georg Jensen
Posted on June 04 2017
Part of the Grosvenor series at this year's London Craft Week, Georg Jensen put on a silversmithing demonstration for everyone to attend at their flagship store on Mount Street. Renowned for its collaborations with design icons across the globe, along with an impressive and diverse collection of silverware designs, it was wonderful to see another side to the business, often hidden from the public eye. Adding a story and layers to each design, sections of the silversmithing process were displayed for visitors to see the steps that go into the creation of the design.
Since the beginning of the brand in 1904, the craft of Silversmithing, the tools and techniques have been passed down to generations of artisans, ensuring that the craft and beautiful objects created remain just as strong and desirable in today's markets as they did decades ago.
Touring the showroom, guests were introduced to some of the iconic Georg Jensen designs, explaining the techniques and craftsmanship that goes into creating each individual piece. It was fascinating to have an insight into the creation process, from the intricate shapes to the familiar smooth and seamless finishes that we all love.
The two designs constructed on the demonstration were the Cocktail Shaker, a unique piece designed during the Art Deco era by Sigvard Bernadotte to represent simplicity and practicality with classical, geometric shapes and limited ornamentation. The other design seen in the video is the Dessert goblet with hand hammered surface. This striking piece dates back to the start of the brand yet remains a timeless item that looks just as impressive served on a table today as it did decades ago.
Further details on the Georg Jensen silverware can be seen on the official website. Details on the brands taking part in the 2017 edition be viewed via the London Craft Week website.
